The salary of a peacekeeper

The United Nations payments system is very complex, because it pays lots of different persons, from national staff to directors and heads of mission.

Essentially, staff in a peacekeeping operation can be divided in three components: military, police and civilian.

Military salary

According to U.N., "Peacekeeping soldiers are paid by their own Governments according to their own national rank and salary scale. Countries volunteering uniformed personnel to peacekeeping operations are reimbursed by the UN at a standard rate, approved by the General Assembly, of a little over US$1,028 per soldier per month."

This does not mean, however, that all military personnel will receive the same. This amount (US$ 1,028) is for the lowest rank, which are the soldiers..

Military observers, generally from the rank of Captain and above, will receive more, once they are paid in Mission subsistance allowance (MSA), which varies from mission to mission. In general, they are paid around US$ 150 per day. If there are more risks or living conditions are worst (or more expensive), the payment will be higher.

Police salary

There are basically two categories of police personnel working in peacekeeping operations: Formed Police Units (FPU) and Individual Police Officers (IPO).

FPU members are paid by their own governments, since they are "auto-sustained" units. This means that they will not use U.N. structure or logistics resources. In this case, U.N. pays the country government, and the government pays FPU personnel according to their own rules. Thus, we can't specify an average of salary.

In the other hand, Individual Police Officers will receive the same MSA as military observers, which can vary from US$120 to around US$200 per day. Again, this depends on each mission and these values can be verified in the International Civil Service Commission (ICSC) website.

So, what are you waiting for? Start studying and prepare yourself to be a peacekeeper!

How do i apply to became a correctional officer

To work in the field the selection process is the same as UNPOL (SAAT). In mission area, Correctional officers are part of UNPOL. In some missions, there are also vacancies for Correctional Officers as Professional Staff, but it is more likely to make the strategic planning related to the peacebuilding process.

Dear Sir/Madam, I'm experienced senior Police Officer with a nineteen years of experience in Law enforcement, Security&Safety, SWAT and SF units. I have served in UNMIL in period 2012/13 in role of Police Adviser and I can say it was great professional as well as valuable life experience. Since I have returned, I am trying to apply for posted Security Positions through UN INSPIRA. So far, I sent over 60 job applications, but haven't been on rooster yet. Please, allow me to express my unsatisfactory and disappointing regarding that. I believe it's a huge and complicated process of selection, but can you provide me an information what seems to be a main problem for not being on roster for so long period of time? Thanks in advance.
